Los Cabos' expansion continues

Over the past three decades, the Los Cabos region has evolved from a sleepy fishing village to a world-renowned tourist destination. Perfect weather, spectacular scenery, outstanding recreational facilities and easy access have made Los Cabos a premier resort destination with one of the fastest growing real estate markets in the world.
Like any metro area coping with increased population, business and tourism, Los Cabos has had to deal with its share of traffic challenges. In order to keep up with expansion and to accommodate future growth, the Los Cabos Tourism Board in 2007 commissioned a circulation study of traffic in greater Los Cabos to improve traffic flow during peak periods. The study will include traffic counts of the major tourist areas of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Eventually, the data will be used to formulate modifications to existing traffic patterns, as well as develop long-range solutions to Los Cabos' growing road congestion.
Another improvement in the works is the San José del Cabo Airport expansion project, which is currently under way. In a move aimed at accommodating the region's tourist explosion, airport and tourism officials announced the airport would receive a number of upgrades in the next three years. Enhancements will include additional parallel landing strips to accommodate more flights, reconfigured highway access, a fourth terminal building that will adjoin a remodeled Terminal 3, and a new structure offering expanded car rental facilities, shops and business services. The expansion began in late summer 2007 and is slated for completion by early 2010.
Mexican President Felipe Calderón announced last August that Cabo San Lucas is one of several cities around the country designated for a cruise ship dock. Not only will this alleviate the tedious shuttling of passengers on small tenders to and from shore, but it will create more jobs. This is part of the president's five-year plan for economic improvements.

Puerto Los Cabos
