The 2012 G-20 Summit will take place in Los Cabos

The spotlight continues to shine on Los Cabos. Located at the tip of Baja California Sur, there are many reasons for the area’s continued popularity, one of which is the luxe atmosphere found throughout the region. In 2011, for example, the luxurious Sirena del Mar Welk Resort Cabo was named the number one hotel in Mexico, according to the list of Top 25 Hotels in the World by TripAdvisor 2011 Travelers’ Choice Awards. Also, the Los Cabos Convention & Visitors Bureau was honored with a TravelAge West 2011 Editor’s Pick Award in the category of Favorite Three-Night Destination to Sell as part of the TravelAge West WAVE (Western Agents’ Votes of Excellence) Awards.
As the awards keep arriving, so do visitors from around the globe. In June 2012, Los Cabos will host the seventh meeting of the G-20 Summit, a gathering of industrial and emerging-market nations. The excitement and enthusiasm for this world-class event is already on the minds of Los Cabos officials.
“Hosting the G-20 will be a tremendous opportunity for our destination and for Mexico,” said Gonzalo Franyutti, president of the Los Cabos Convention & Visitors Bureau. Franyutti added that “Los Cabos has the contemporary tourism infrastructure and the safety record required to host an event of this caliber.” The summit is expected to bring more than 16,000 visitors, including President Obama and other world leaders. In preparation for the summit, Los Cabos plans to build a new convention center and complete the highway project from San José to Cabo San Lucas.
As the destination of choice among sophisticated travelers, Los Cabos also offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience — regardless of the number of visits. Living up to the adage “If you build it, they will come,” Los Cabos officials continue to redefine the area with new developments and stunning surprises. Of late, Los Cabos welcomed the Grand Solmar Land’s End Resort & Spa Cabo San Lucas, which was rebranded and renovated at its southernmost tip location on the Baja Peninsula where the Sea of Cortés meets the Pacific Ocean. The Grand Solmar has the distinction of being the area’s only new hotel opening during 2011. But there are several exquisite properties on the horizon.
The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company and Morgans Hotel Group have both announced future developments in the area with ambitious plans to complete the projects within the next three years. “We are thrilled to welcome these incredible properties and future developments to Los Cabos,” said Franyutti. “These recent announcements, coupled with our unwavering commitment to provide the very best vacation experience for all travelers, positions Los Cabos for continued growth as Mexico’s premier tourism destination.”
Other new developments include the Wyndham Cabo San Lucas Resort. The five-story resort will go through a $10 million renovation and is scheduled for completion by early 2012. The Wyndham Cabo San Lucas Resort is located adjacent to the Cabo San Lucas Marina, putting travelers in the heart of downtown and just steps from activities and excitement.
The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company’s joint venture between Grupo Questro and Trinity Investments L.L.C. will result in a Ritz-Carlton Reserve property built within Puerto Los Cabos in San José del Cabo. This will be the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve property in Mexico. It will feature 124 private, single-story and oceanfront villas, each with panoramic views of the Sea of Cortés. The exclusive property is set to open in 2014.
The Morgans Hotel Group has signed hotel-management agreements that will expand the Delano brand to Los Cabos. The 114-room Delano property in Cabo San Lucas is currently under construction and is expected to also feature 23 branded residences, as well as a modern restaurant and spa. The Delano Hotel is scheduled to open in early 2013.
