Edith Jiménez: An Award-Winning Restaurateur

The world would be a better place if there were more women like her.

By Cecilia Escribano

Owner of the restaurants Edith's and The Office — as well as Armando Montaño's business partner in San José del Cabo's El Chilar restaurant — Edith Jiménez moved to Los Cabos from Acapulco when she was 15. She used to sell tamarinds, chicken and bread. And those who knew her back then claim that her beauty turned heads all over the place.

"This place gave me the opportunity to grow as a woman and to advance professionally. Moreover, here I met my husband and had my two daughters," says Jiménez. She's a wonderful woman whose relentless work has yielded great results: her restaurant Edith's earned a Five Diamonds rating for the third year in a row.

But there's more. Editorial Águeda presented Jiménez with a medal for her constant work, although she considers graduating as a chef with honors as her biggest achievement.

It's hard to believe that Jiménez maintains her unpretentious personality despite all the accolades she's earned. She's been able to turn her success into generosity and every year she travels with her team to various parts of the world in order to sample wines, taste new dishes and acquire new experiences. She likes to think of her business as a school where her employees can earn a living and always have the necessary tools to improve.

At 49 and boasting a stellar career, Jiménez is an staunch supporter of Mexican wine and of the culture of Baja California Sur, for which she feels great pride. She's planning to publish a book about the region's recipes and then open a restaurant in Los Cabos that will prepare those recipes. In order to achieve this goal, for the past 15 years she's been knocking on the doors of every resident throughout the peninsula so she can learn their culinary secrets.

With her distinctive white dress and a wide-brimmed hat, Jiménez is an admirable woman with a jolly sense of humor — a registered trademark of Los Cabos that has become an important component of the history of this beautiful destination in the southern reaches of Baja California.
