Historic San José del Cabo
Come and Discover Baja's Old Flavor in San José del Cabo
You take a walk into the past through its streets and its buildings that have a history of over 300 years.
- The magic of Baja sparked here when the Spaniards arrived to the peninsula looking for a safe haven to replenish their Galleon's supplies.
- In 1730 the Jesuit Missionary Nicolas Tamaral was sent to colonize the Pericue Indians and thus founded the Mission of San Jose Anuiti.
- The Pericue didn't settle well to their newly imposed religion and burnt down the church in 1734. The church was then built in its present location and around it the new town developed.
- The Manila Galleons sailed into San Jose's estuary to replenish their fresh water supplies and the much needed oranges.
- These treasure-filled vessels became easy targets for English and Dutch pirates. The Spanish were forced to create a Military outpost that was kept here until the Mexican Independence.
- During the Mexican American War from 1846 to1848 the U.S. Marines occupied the town.
- The town plaza is named after Mexican Naval Officer Jose Antonio Mijares who led the Mexicans to victory after an intense battle in which he lost his life.
- Today a lovely renovated plaza surrounded by the church, City Hall, Casa de la Cultura and the Maritime Museum continues to be the local’s gathering point. It’s the perfect place for visitors to discover the town's old flavor. You will discover unique stores, delicious restaurants and an emerging fine art community. Historic Downtown San Jose del Cabo is a must for anyone visiting the Los Cabos area!
