The Pearls of La Paz
Shoppers who crave wisdom and power, take note.
Pearls personify both and have since the beginning of mankind. Aztecs and Mayans traded them. Spaniards fought for them. Expeditions to the Sea of Cortes sought to find the "Sea of Pearls." Later came ships from Russia and England. By the 1600s, pearls had become the biggest export until gold and silver took top honors. The nearby city of La Paz was the black pearl center of the world.
Today these gems of Baja are simply known as the Pearls of La Paz. But no need to travel two hours to the capital city to find one. Again, the finer jewelry stores in San Lucas and San Jose showcase them.
