Tracy Ehrenberg Hooked on Cabo
By Rick Stedman
Sportfishing is a passion for many who visit Los Cabos. Since 1980, Pisces Sportfishing has served as one of the leaders in the industry, plying the azure waters of the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortés. Not only is the company unique in its promotion of catch and release, Pisces Sportfishing is also run by a woman — Tracy Ehrenberg.
In a male-dominated industry, Ehrenberg has been at the helm of the company for the past 16 years, making numerous improvements and expanding the fleet. Her employees fondly address her as La Patrona ("Boss Lady"). "We have 38 boats in our fleet and nearly 100 employees," says Ehrenberg. "We believe in building relationships, and that's why we have some clients who have been with us for the past 20 years."
Boats in the Pisces Sportfishing fleet range from a 28-footer up to a 111-foot yacht. "We have something for just about every type of fishing want or need," explains Ehrenberg. "And our catch rate is usually 70 to 100 percent."
The company has fared well in local tournaments. In October 2006, for example, a Pisces Sportfishing boat won the Los Cabos Billfish Association Tournament. Also, a Pisces boat in a recent tuna tournament netted the largest fish — 318 pounds. The largest fish Ehrenberg has ever reeled in: a 300-pound blue marlin that she released.
Raised in Brighton and London, England, Ehrenberg moved to the Canary Islands when she was 19 years old. While there, she met and married her husband, Marco Ehrenberg, who owns Ehrenberg & Associates / Pisces Real Estate in Los Cabos.
In addition to providing customers with a quality fishing experience, Ehrenberg also keeps the rest of the world informed about Los Cabos fishing in her "Pisces Weekly Fish Report." The report, which is regularly used by publications like the L.A. Times, contains a summary of the fishing activities based on the catches of the Pisces Sportfishing fleet. The report contains information like where billfish (marlin, sailfish and swordfish) and other species are biting, along with weather conditions, water temperatures and best lures to use.
When not running the business, Ehrenberg enjoys equestrian pursuits. "I have six horses and love riding on a regular basis," she says. Her appreciation extends to the area she now calls home. "I grew up in England, where I was used to green rolling hills. But the stark contrast of the Los Cabos landscape is so beautiful. I just love it here."
Whether writing a weekly column or landing a huge fish, La Patrona has raised the bar for the sportfishing industry in Los Cabos.
