Sunny Irvine: Creating Lifelong Memories

Tropical Tours creates memories that last a lifetime. That's why this Cabo-based company has been in the outdoor recreation business for nearly three decades.

According to company director Sunny Irvine, Tropical Tours caters mainly to cruise ship clientele, and offers about 30 different activities. A few of the most popular water activities are the Pez Gato, Tropicat and Cabo Mar snorkeling, whale watching and sunset dinner cruises. For playtime in the desert, Rancho Carisuva offers horseback riding on the beach, as well as Rhino Adventures and ATV tours. The Baja Outback Hummer tour (www.bajaoutback.com) is also a favorite of guests.

Irvine's father and uncle founded this family business 30 years ago. "I basically have been involved with Tropical Tours since birth," says Irvine. As such, growing up in the business gave him a good understanding of what it takes to make the business function and operate smoothly. As such, he assumed the role of company director in 2000. "Though my father and uncle have since retired, they both have maintained an advisory position when needed," says Irvine.

Originally from Mazatlan, Irvine moved to Los Cabos nearly 20 years ago. This ever-changing and always challenging job is devoid of a typical workday scenario. Whether it's checking on a ship's arrival in port or attending a trade show to enhance business, Irvine has the skill and business acumen to keep the ship sailing regardless of the weather. "We know that we have a tremendous responsibility to the destination and to Mexico to present Tropical Tours at the highest level possible," he explains. "All of our staff members are continuously reminded of this fact, as each and every one of them is directly representing our country, and that is a very big responsibility and one that we do not take lightly."

When not overseeing the Tropical Tours operation, Irvine enjoys water sports like diving, snorkeling and wakeboarding. He also loves his motorcycle, and in 2009 will participate in the famous Dakar Rally for the second time.

On the family front, good things take time, but they are worth the wait. In March 2009, Irvine will marry Doris, the girl of his dreams. "We have known each other since grade school and just recently reunited at a friend's wedding," he explains. "Since then, we have been practically inseparable."

For Sunny Irvine, making memories that last a lifetime is now both a personal and professional goal.
