Jason Ballog: Palmilla Golf Pro Loves His "Office"

Jason Ballog has one of the best jobs in the world. As general manager of the Palmilla Golf Club, Ballog's "office" overlooks this venerable Los Cabos course that was designed by Jack Nicklaus. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Ballog doesn't long for the cold and snow that comes with living in the Buckeye state — or any other state, for that matter. Between 2001 and 2004, Ballog volleyed between the United States and Mexico, but finally moved to the Los Cabos area permanently in 2006. "This is a great country, with great people and a rich culture," he says. "You can still get the same conveniences here as in the States, but with perfect weather year-round."

It's that fantastic weather that keeps visitors returning and expats like Ballog choosing to stay in Los Cabos. Some of those visitors to Palmilla who come for the weather, golf and first-class amenities include movie stars, professional golfers and musicians. Ballog has had the good fortune to meet a few of them, including Bob Estes, Tom Lehman, David Duval, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Ray Allen, Billy Crystal, Kurt Russell, Cal Ripken Jr. and Rascal Flatts.

"I have actually golfed with Ray Romano, Fred Funk and Arthur Blank," Ballog admits. With a zero handicap, Ballog can hold his own on a golf course. "That's one of the enjoyable aspects of being in the golf industry — all the enjoyable people you get to meet on a daily basis. This truly is a unique experience every day."

Working at the area's only 27-hole course, Ballog gets out to play golf about three times a month. Of the Arroyo Nine, Ocean Nine and Mountain Nine, Ballog has a fondness for the latter. "This is such a diverse course, you really won't be disappointed with any part of it," he says. He also mentions that plans are under way for renovating the greens and bunkers, as well as a full renovation of the practice facility. Attention to detail and customer service are two of the hallmarks that Troon Golf Management exemplifies, which make the Palmilla Resort a favorite of visitors.

One thing is for certain: Jason Ballog's appreciation for his job is not something he takes lightly, and he's forever grateful. "The best thing about being a golf pro is the wonderful people you meet in this business, and being able to put a smile on someone's face every day."
