Rodrigo Uribe: Teaching Golf Is His Passion

Questro’s new director of instruction

By Rick Stedman

Rodrigo UribeWhen you ask Rodrigo Uribe about his job, he has to think about it for a moment. As director of instruction at Questro Golf, he forgets at times that he gets paid to do something he absolutely loves. “Teaching golf has always been my passion, and right now, this is a very fulfilling stage in my career,” says Uribe.

As director of instruction, his expertise is spread over three courses owned and operated by Questro Golf in the Los Cabos area, including Cabo Real, Club Campestre San José and Puerto Los Cabos. Golf lessons include a broad range of focus areas, like full swing, pitch shots, chip shots, sand shots and putting. “After the initial instruction phase, I then take the student/golfer out on the golf course and focus on course management, like working with different lies, how much the wind affects the shot and mainly how to avoid obstacles in order to play it safe,” Uribe explains.

Born and raised in Mexico City, Uribe’s parents played an important role in his formative golf years. “My parents were a great support and inspiration for my golf growth as a kid,” he says. “My dad put a lot of effort into organizing junior golf events, while my mom would always get me and my brother, Armando, up early so we could be the first to tee off, which was usually before 6:30 a.m.”

Prior to his appointment as Questro’s director of instruction in January 2010, Uribe worked at Cabo del Sol as an assistant golf pro before taking the head golf pro position at Cabo Real in 2006. Other stints along the way included working as outside operations at TPC Myrtle Beach, S.C., and head pro at the Mayan Palace in Acapulco.

While living in the U.S., Uribe had a chance to visit Augusta National, his favorite course on the planet. “As I walked the golf course, all the memories of golf legends past gave me chills,” he says. “The exquisitely manicured course, its landscape and the potential challenge of the golf course are what I liked most about Augusta.”

When not teaching golf, Uribe likes spending time with his wife, Nubia, snow skiing, skydiving and playing tennis.
