Oscar Ortiz: A Leader Among Tour Operators

Quality eco-adventures await Cabo visitors.

By Rick Stedman

Oscar OrtizCabo Expeditions is in the business of making memories, fond memories for eco-adventure enthusiasts visiting Los Cabos. Much of that credit is due to the diligence and hard work of Cabo Expeditions’ director Oscar Ortiz, who has been with the company since its inception 15 years ago. What started out as a three-member team with two boats has grown to a fleet of watercraft and nearly 60 full-time employees.

“We use the wonderful natural resources at our disposal and share these with hundreds of visitors each year,” says Ortiz, a Mexico City transplant 16 years ago. “We offer a variety of excursions, including whale watching, parasailing, comprehensive city tours of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, and snuba, which is a combination of snorkeling and scuba diving. In addition to whale watching and swimming with whale sharks, one of the company’s most popular offerings is a visit to Espíritu Santo Island. Located just off the coast of La Paz, Ortiz says this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the few places on earth where time seems to stand still.

When not overseeing the operation of Cabo Expeditions, Ortiz enjoys spending time with his wife, son, brothers, and mother. Given the stunning scenery at his disposal, it’s no surprise that his vocation and avocation are literally one in the same. Ortiz’s off-duty activities include scuba diving, underwater video and photography. “Not many people can say they truly love what they do for a living,” he says. “I am very fortunate to be able to do this.”

One of Ortiz’s proudest moments as director of Cabo Expeditions came recently when the company received an award from Mexico’s Federal Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) for its dedication to promoting and rewarding best practices in sustainable tourism. Only 42 hospitality-focused companies in the greater Los Cabos region received the Distinctive M management system for quality improvement.

“Proudly, Cabo Expeditions successfully completed the high-level tourism program, and today, we are accredited as a leader not only compared to other tour operators but in the destination of Los Cabos overall,” Ortiz explains. “This commitment to reach the highest level and award demonstrates our company’s yearning to deliver quality and exceed customer expectations. Our commitment in the area of customer satisfaction has been acknowledged, and our team at Cabo Expeditions will continue to excel in this area, just as our customers would expect.”

Whether it’s under the water, on land, or at sea, the team at Cabo Expeditions has created unforgettable experiences for thousands of visitors. Their plan, according to Ortiz, is to continue sharing the natural resource treasures with the public for years to come.
